Alex Hughes

Alex is a highly experienced, goal-oriented University leader and manager, who has worked in institutions across the spectrum of UK HE, devising and delivering institutional strategy. As Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement at the University of Westminster, she leads the University’s internationalisation activities, working with colleagues in the Faculties, Professional Services and the University Executive Board. Her strategic focus at Westminster includes areas such as overseas partnerships, the internationalisation of the student and staff experience, international student recruitment, relations with Westminster’s global alumni community and Employability.

Alex’s previous HE leadership roles include that of Pro-Vice-Chancellor External at the University of Kent, where she led the University’s Internationalisation Strategy. Her remit at Kent also included the non academic student experience and the employability agenda. The student experience was likewise a focus of her work at the University of Birmingham, where she was Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Quality and Students.

External bodies with which she has been involved include the AHRC, the QAA and the Outward Mobility Strategy Board. She is currently Vice-President of the SGroup European Universities’ Network Executive and Vice-Chair of the Outward Student Mobility Advisory Board. She has spoken on internationalisation and on the student experience at conferences in Europe, Asia and the US and has substantial experience of international alumni relations and transnational education.

Alex holds a BA (Hons) in French and German and a PhD from the University of London, and a Certificate in Education from the University of Oxford. She has published widely in the area of  20th Century French literary and cultural studies.
