Halpin was commissioned to facilitate the development of a new university strategy, engaging the Board and SLT in a series of workshops. We designed and facilitated workshops for the Executive Team, the Board Chairs of Committees, Strategic Management Team (senior staff), and the whole Board.
Using a ‘strategy map’ method, we structured the workshop including PESTLE analysis of the external environment. The workshops were used to review and refresh the Mission, Vision and Values and develop high-level strategic objectives for the new strategy. Workshops with different groups meant the strategy development was collaborative and Board members in particular were engaged from an early stage.
The proposals that came from the first three workshops were then used as part of a consultation exercise with staff and students utilising a survey that Halpin designed and hosted. We then used the consultation feedback and the comments from the Board members at the final workshop to inform the draft strategy which we wrote (with the Vice-Chancellor also having input to various drafts).
We also conducted a light-touch Governance Review alongside the project. AECC has subsequently asked us to facilitate a Board Strategy workshop in September to support implementation.
