Saul was Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Sussex from 2017-21, responsible for the day-to-day academic management and leadership of the university working alongside the VC (18,000 students, 2,500 FTE staff, annual turnover £330m). He provided line management to nine Heads of School (previously 12, before merging some Schools in the last year).
He was the architect, primary author and executive lead for the University’s Strategic Framework (A better university for a better world, aka Sussex 2025) and associated strategies and KPI/Ts.
Before Sussex, he was Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Birmingham and Head of the College of Social Sciences. The College included four Schools with 20 academic departments and more than a dozen research institutes and centres.
Saul has strong academic, research, policy and practice credibility, influence and impact, and is regarded as the world expert in research, policy and practice on ‘young carers’. He has experience in leading work on internationalisation and developing international research collaborations at the Universities of Nottingham and Birmingham.
